Amaro Meletti Review
By Adam Aslan

In Praise of Amaro: A review of Amaro Meltti I'm not sure how it all happened, but suddenly I am obsessed with amaros. While there are many amaros to choose from, Amaro Meletti provides one of the best values out there for those in search of a high quality amaro at a reasonable price. When tasting an amaro it is necessary to either be a well established veteran amaro drinker or to be able to taste many amaros in a single session to fully understand the substantial differences between each brand of the bitter liqueur.

The real question is just how far on the spectrum of bitterness is Amaro Meletti? To my taste buds, it is actually one of the most bitter amaros out there. Is that to say that it is not tasty? Of course not. Every amaro is a complex ride thru sensations of bitter and sweet. Amaro Meletti is just a bit more of a bite to it than some of the other amaros out there.

If it is a bit more astringent than other amaros it could be because it is one of the older Amaros out there; it was created in 1870 by Silvio Meletti. With typical descriptors of herbal or medicinal a bit lacking in terms of a clear understand of what that could mean to the tastebuds a better description would probably be something like “ a bitter liqueur with a hint of orange and a slightly sweet finish.” One interesting aspect of Meletti is that it contains saffron, which is interesting since it is actually one of the cheaper amaros available in the US. Thus, one can feel both fancy and thrifty drinking Amaro Meletti. Saluti!
